So I'm on Copart, like you do.

I need to pick up a winter car. After talking to my dad, he can't sell either of the vehicles we'd been talking about because he doesn't have anything else lined up to take their place - the V8 S10 is too nice for winter driving and the lifted C10 gets single-digit MPG's.

After the good luck with the Ram 50, I decided to check out the Madison auction again to see what's coming up. Found three decent candidates. All of them are run and drive verified by Copart and have clear Wisconsin titles.

1. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! 48k miles, 2.0L, automatic. Minor front damage, very minimal rust spot over RR wheel. Interior in good shape. Donated vehicle - net proceeds go to charity. Has a reserve price.

2. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! 273k miles, 2.2L, 5-speed. Rust spots over rear wheels and on hatch. Interior in good shape. Sold "On Approval", meaning seller reserves right to approve final high bid (i.e. if it doesn't go for enough, they won't let it go. Not technically a reserve.).

3. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! 152k miles, 1.8L, automatic. Has black hood and paint damage on both bumpers. Runs 4x100 wheels, so I can use the snow tires I already own. Donated vehicle. Sold "Pure Sale" - no approval, no reserve.

All 3 come up on the Tuesday auction (9/23). What does Oppo think?

If the lot numbers are an indicator, the Corolla will go first, followed by the Cav and later the Subie. I'd say bid on the Corolla and Cav, then the Legacy if you didn't get either of those for a good price.

The 'Rolla is lot 19, Scoobaru is lot 34, and Grandma's church car is lot 35.

Ah, go for the Rolla first. They're indestructible and it'll still be worth what you paid now, in the spring. I'm not so sure about Scoob, seems like they probably want to get too much out of it. The Cav is a fine last resort.

Corolla no question - dumb technology, you have tires, and if you wreck it there will no tears shed.

The Ram 50 was sold On Approval, so I'm not that concerned about that. It just means you wait a day or two between auction end and them telling you if you have a car or not.

My concern with the Subie is that even though it's pretty Jalop - 5 speed wagon, Boxer 4, all wheel drive - it's really high mileage. I don't think there'll be much of a Lesbian Tax on it because even though Madison has a lot in common with Vermont and Colorado in that regard, it's a bit too old for the ladylove set.

Eh, I see a fair amount of them around with pretty high milage; I'd be more comfortable with that than a piece of '80s GM rubbish. Common sense is Corolla first, of course.

Dammit. Now I wanna bid on a box truck I found on there just for the 6.0L V8 for my Trans Am.

I mentioned them to my Dad (Former ASE certified tech at Ford and Chevy dealers, former yard manager at a salvage yard, currently head motherfucker in charge of all things mechanical repair at a bodyshop) and he went "no no no no no" at the Subie. His logic was too many miles and too much of a cunt to work on.

It *is* more interesting than the beige sedans though... Goddamnit.
